Willian describes his last-minute decision to leave Tottenham and join Chelsea, saying, “I was at the Tottenham training field.”
Willian has discussed his experience with Chelsea and the unexpected turns his life took to get to Stamford Bridge.
“I spent two weeks in London waiting impatiently for Tottenham to make a decision. Gareth Bale was in the process of leaving them to join Real Madrid, thus they were in a precarious situation.
Liverpool had a similar interest. Concerning Chelsea, I was unsure. They had expressed interest, though it wasn’t initially as strong.
“(They) arrived the day I was supposed to sign the Spurs deal. When the call came in, I was at Tottenham’s practice facility finalizing the deal. Chelsea just phoned me and they want you, my agent informed me.
I responded, “Okay, I want to go there! I then walked away from the practice field and headed to the hotel. It was a challenging scenario because I had essentially committed to join Spurs. But there was only Chelsea in my head.
“Once Anzhi and Chelsea reached an agreement, I was just interested in traveling there. It was the wisest career move I’ve ever made.
Willian returned to London again this summer, although he is now a Fulham player.
