Thiago Silva discusses his ambition to play until he is 40 and teases a new contract.

Although Thiago Silva just turned 38, he doesn’t appear to be slowing down.

He is a regular starter and star for Chelsea, and he will represent Brazil at the World Cup in Qatar this winter.

He’s not just still active at 38; at that age, he’s still one of the Premier League’s top central defenders. In an interview posted today on the Chelsea website, he stated his determination to continue playing at the highest level for at least another couple of years.

“I think about Zlatan frequently, and now more frequently because Chelsea will play AC Milan in the Champions League,” he continued. “My goal is to continue playing until I’m 40, but I’m not sure if it will be at this level or in this competition.””

“It depends on this season, and we’ll watch the World Cup to see what happens. It also depends on if my contract is extended, but I do intend to play through to 40.”

Wesley Fofana, a significant young center defender signed by Chelsea this summer, will eventually take Silva’s place. However, a France international might pick up a lot from the Brazil captain in the interim.

Given the two years of proof, it would be absurd to deny him the extension he alludes to.
