Rio Ferdinand reveals secret £18m Chelsea bid amid accepted offer as he explains the transfer decision.

Rio Ferdinand has given his reasons for choosing Leeds United over Chelsea when he was younger. The former England international transferred from West Ham to Elland Road in 2000 for a British transfer record cost of £18 million.

The defender, who had just turned 22 years old, disclosed that the Blues made a last-minute effort to match the Yorkshire side’s offer. Ferdinand, however, believed it would be best to leave the city’s center in order to stay focused due to the increasing distractions in London.

The 43-year-old discussed how Chelsea nearly thwarted a move to Leeds during an appearance on The Joe Cole Cast. Ferdinand said:

“The phone rings while my dad and I were out shopping. West Ham’s CEO announced, “We have accepted a bid of 18 million pounds from Leeds.

“I left the instant he stated I was there. Funny thing is, just as I was about to meet Leeds, Chelsea called and said, “We’ll match anything Leeds are offering.”

And I responded, “Listen, with all due respect, thank you, but I need to leave London since I was having a lot of problems off the field. While my friends and I were out frequently, I was heading to my friend’s house to open an envelope.

The former Manchester United defender continued, “Anything that was going on, I was there.” “I was curious to learn more. I was a social butterfly, so leaving and getting away so I wouldn’t feel compelled to go to clubs was best for my work.

According to the Mirror, Ferdinand described the moment he realized he was starting to become enmeshed in the London nightlife when speaking to Eddie Hearn on his BBC podcast “No Passion, No Point.” He said,

“The previous summer, I was cut from the England team for Euro 2000. Kevin Keegan, the manager, turned me down.

“I was upset, but I think it was one of the nicest things that ever happened to me. I have to admit that I was p****d off with him. After my first rage with him, I glanced in the mirror and realized that it was all up to me. I frequently venture outside.

“I went on vacation that summer, came home, and began training before the start of preseason. Before we came back in, I ran continuously in the park for almost 10 days. I returned, got right to work, and in November of that year, I traveled to Leeds.
