In response to Villa’s defeat by Chelsea, Gerrard said, “We definitely didn’t deserve to be 2-0 down.”

Steven Gerrard responded, “No, we never, and it can happen in sport, when asked if Aston Villa received what they deserved in the match with Chelsea.

“I’ve been playing the game for a very long time, so I know you have to seize your chances and reward yourself for all that great, thrilling play.

“We wanted to amuse the crowd, and I believe we accomplished so for an hour. We certainly didn’t deserve to be down 2-0 at that point.

“Our play was at a high level, we were aggressive both in and out of possession, and we had the ability to generate chances.

“I’ve told the players, “For the first hour, I’m incredibly proud of you. I can’t ask you for anything else.

“We’ll score the most points if they can repeat that performance on Thursday night and the following weekend.

“We simply sent a really good team to the front lines there since we were unable to reward ourselves for all the excellent play.

To be fair to Vila, they were the superior team for a significant portion of the match, but Kepa, who came in to fill in for a stellar performance, made seven saves.

Chelsea, and Mason Mount in particular, outperformed their opponents at the opposite end of the field, which is why they earned three points at Villa Park.
