Former Chelsea striker Diego Costa set for shock Premier League return as Aubameyang set for his debut

Former Chelsea striker Diego Costa could return to the Premier League, four years after he permanently left Stamford Bridge for Atlético Madrid.

Since then, the Spaniard has had an on-and-off relationship with Atletico manager Diego Simeone. His injury record combined with multiple factors led to the Spanish giants releasing him at the end of the contract as a free agent. To which Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro responded by taking a chance on his services with the aim that he could potentially propel them to a rare Serie A title.

In the 19 games he played over the 2021-22 campaign, Costa helped out in attaining a total of six goal contributions in all competitions as the former prolific Chelsea striker played his part in the short-term by shaking up the pecking order in Brazil’s top league.

He left the club at the end of 2022 with a Serie A title and Brazilian cup credited to his name. Two trophies added more to the winning pedigree of the Brazil-born number 9 who won a total of three trophies during his up-and-down Blues stint.

No wonder Wolverhampton Wanderers, whose new signing Sasa Kaladjzic is out injured already with a long-term injury, are considering offering the now free agent a rare contract offer as the much loved José Mourinho signing contemplates returning to England, The Athletic have reported.

Wolves, managed by Portuguese manager Bruno Lage, have a good affiliation with super agent Jorge Mendes and he is bound to have an involvement in bringing the established Premier League striker back to a place where he terrorised defenders week in, week out.

To a point where Costa attained a total of 23 goal contributions from 26 games in that famous 2014/15 season. A campaign remembered well for that majestic link-up and chemistry formed between Cesc Fabregas and the main man in question who is sure to make the Premier League more exciting than it already is.

If Costa was to complete this move to the West Midlands, the English top flight would contain all of Erling Haaland, Gabriel Jesus, Darwin Nunez, Harry Kane, Cristiano Ronaldo and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang plying their trade.

The question now though is whether or not Chelsea’s newest recruit and former Golden Boot winner will be able to match the 23-goal contributions Costa achieved during his first season at Stamford Bridge and in the process, break the number 9 curse that has haunted the likes of Alvaro Morata, Gonzalo Higuain and Romelu Lukaku in recent seasons.
