Chelsea set to sign the top target of Barcelona, whom Thierry Henry referred to as a unique “rare breed.”

It’s possible that Chelsea and Barcelona may again compete for the same transfer target.

With the La Liga leaders reportedly mulling a deal for Josko Gvardiol to replace Gerard Pique, Chelsea may have to contend with Barcelona for another of their top targets. Graham Potter has reportedly been interested in signing the RB Leipzig defender as a way to bolster his defense, but there may now be competition for his services.

During the summer transfer window, Chelsea and Barcelona clashed multiple times as both teams sought to improve their lineups.

Before the Blaugrana got involved, it was believed that the Blues had agreements in place with Leeds for Raphinha and Sevilla for Jules Kounde. The two followed Andreas Christensen, a former defender for the Blues, to Camp Nou when he refused to renew his contract in west London.

Later in the transfer window, the two teams participated in the same deals, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Marcos Alonso departing in different directions on deadline day. Additionally, it was said that Chelsea kept an eye on Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong but did not initially express interest.

Given that they both have their sights set on the same player, the teams may now come into contact once more during the approaching January transfer window. Barcelona is interested in signing Gvardiol to replace the recently retired club legend Pique, according to the Spanish tabloid Sport.

In order to strengthen his defensive options, Potter has been widely rumoured to be targeting the Croatian for Chelsea. The Blues’ defense has had some issues this year, giving up 17 goals in 14 games, which has them sitting in seventh place in the league.

The club spent almost £165 million on Kalidou Koulibaly, Marc Cucurella, and Wesley Fofana over the summer to bolster their defense. However, no player has yet to impress during their time with the team, with the Frenchman dealing with injury concerns and the former Napoli and Brighton players falling short of expectations.
